Pastor and former Brazilian deputy Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, 61, was sentenced to 50 years in prison this Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.
On June 16, 2019, priest Anderson do Carmo died after being shot 30 times at the door of the house where he lived in Nitroi, a city in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro.
Flordelise attributed the preacher’s murder to a robbery by several men.
However, investigations by the Ministry of Public Affairs and the police indicated that the then Vice-Chancellor had planned her husband’s death in collaboration with some of her children in a scheme launched in 2018 through several failed poisonings.
The prosecutor’s indictment, which said the murder charges were motivated by financial disputes, accused seven of the pastor’s 55 children – 51 of whom were adopted -.
Since then, the couple’s two children have already been sentenced to 33 years two months seven years six months in November last year.
Flordelis’ trial began on Monday and lasted seven days, with the last session lasting 24 hours.
The evangelical preacher was sentenced to 50 years and 28 days in prison for three counts of first degree murder, attempted murder, using false documents and armed criminal association.
His biological daughter Simone dos Santos Rodríguez was sentenced to 31 years and four months in prison for murder, attempted murder and armed criminal association.
His children and his granddaughter Rayane dos Santos were acquitted.
Flordelis dos Santos de Souza was arrested in August 2021, and two days later Congress released him without parliamentary immunity.
