Groups Say Vote 'No' on R-51

A broad assortment of environmental, transportation, and other groups--including the Sierra Club Cascade Chapter and Washington Retired Citizens--are calling for a "no" vote on the upcoming Referedum-51, which would commit Washington state transportation money chiefly for road-building purposes, to the detriment of public transportation, say the groups.

The website of the Transportation Choices Coalition (www.transportationchoices.org) gives the following alternative plans to fixing our transportation woes:

• Defeat R-51
• Reform WSDOT [WA Department of Transportation] to produce higher performance, lower cost projects.
• Prevent traffic with trip reduction and Smart Growth.
• Expand choices like buses, trains, carpools and vanpools.
• [Create] Smarter roads that move more people: HOV lanes, ramp metering, signal priority, tolls
